How to spot poverty consciousness? Part 1

Just the awareness of the behavior which stems out of poverty consciousness is helpful in coming out of it. I have observed and introspected during my daily meditations and have come up with some sure signs of poverty consciousness. When reading them you may find it difficult to accept but if you meditate on it for 10-15 minutes you will understand it.

Observe people buying fruits and vegetables from road side. They must have stopped their sedan to shop but they will haggle with the vendor endlessly to save ten rupees. If you ask them they will say, “पैसे क्या पेड़ पे उगते हैं? (Money does not grow on trees)” or “वाह साहब खून पसीने की कमाई है, ऐसे कैसे लुटा दें (It is our hard earned money. We can’t just blow them away).” Now observe the same people shopping in a mall. Not only they will buy at the quoted price they will also pay taxes on it to be contended that they bought from a branded retail.

Most of the people buy diyas during Diwali from roadside. Small kids are seen selling diyas and well to do people negotiate endlessly for reduction in prices. The vendor here is more worried about the food he will eat in the evening and less on profit and so he sells at whatever price the buyer is willing to pay and the buyer returns to his home contented that he ensured that he is not duped.

Negotiation is not bad, but putting all your energies in negotiations (that is what is called haggling) and making it an ego issue is a sign of poverty consciousness.

My guru says, “कभी जानबूझकर बेवकूफ बन जाओ, फिर देखो समृद्धि कैसे दौड़ कर आपके पास आती है.” Sometimes, be fooled knowingly and see how prosperity rushes towards you.
