In Rajasthan, there is a culture to install green colored
statues of Lord Ganesha just above the door frame one facing the outside of the
house and one facing inside of the house. This trend has been prevalent due to
two myths; firstly it is believed that Lord Ganesha guards the house and
secondly, that poverty resides at the back of Lord Ganesha. Hence this practice
where two idols are placed back to back started several generations back.
Due to lack of proper Vastu knowledge, this is still in
practice while actually it is a myth.
From our culture, we all know what happened when Lord
Ganesha was guarding his Mother – not a pleasant experience to have one’s head
chopped and replaced by that of an elephant. Despite this practice, the wealth
of several families in the state have declined over the generations.
Lord Ganesha should not be placed on the door as per MahaVastu.
Moreover, there should not be more than one idol of Lord
Ganesha in the house. Lord Ganesha should only be installed in the Pooja and
not used as a decorative piece. I have seen several families who take pride in
their collection of Lord Ganesha statues. Depending on the vastu zone they are
placed they will cause different problems in the life of the residents.
If you have multiple paintings and figurines of Lord
Ganesha, please retain one, place it in the Prayer room and submerge the others
in water.
